Latinx Cinema in the Era of Trump 7:00pm
When Donald Trump called Mexican immigrants "rapists" and "criminals" as he launched his presidential campaign, he sent shockwaves throughout the U.S. Latinx community. The Trump administration has also attempted to end the popular Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, increased the presence and power of ICE agents, and constructed inhumane immigrant detention centers at the U.S./Mexico border.
Writer-director-producer Gregory Nava (My Family, Selena, Bordertown) has been nominated for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, an Emmy and a Writer's Guild Award, and became internationally renowned for his 1983 film El Norte, named an "American classic" as well as designated for special preservation by the Library of Congress. El Norte addresses the plight of undocumented immigrants and has been called "the Grapes of Wrath of our time." Writer-director-producer Barbara Martinez Jitner is Nava's long-time collaborator and is the first Latina to be nominated for both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the breakthrough mini-series, American Family.
This Master Class is a unique opportunity for a freeform discussion with these trailblazers of contemporary Latinx cinema about this difficult time in our national and political landscape, and the role Latinx cinema can play.
This special event is a co-presentation by Facets and the Chicago Latino Film Festival, and will be moderated by Pepe Vargas, Founder and Director of the International Latino Cultural Center and the Chicago Latino Film Festival.
With introduction by Facets Film Program Director, Charles Coleman, and a special selection of film clips by Facets Marketing Director, Paul Gonter.
