CAKE Art Auction 7:00pm - 10:00pm
Bustling auction house and benefit for
CAKE (Chicago Alternative Comics Expo) a non-profit, volunteer-run event which takes place
the first weekend of June at the Center on Halsted (3656 N. Halsted).
The CAKE Art Auction is a feather in the cap of Chicago's thriving independent comics
community. While it's a prime opportunity to score some artwork to brighten up your walls,
more importantly the art auction is an exciting social event where scene boosters and artists alike
intermingle in anticipation of the big shebang in June.
The auction is a lively, entertaining affair with much to offer. Event goers sip and snack while
bidding on original art up for silent auction. Each year the auction invites artists for live
readings; this year's readers are local luminaries Sage Coffey and Corinne Halbert. Chicago
comics notables Beth Hetland and Kyle O'Connell are the raucous auctioneers who will oversee
spirited patrons vying for pieces by over 30 renowned local and national comics makers
including Isabella Rotman, Johnny Sampson, and Jim Woodring. " It can be pretty fierce when
people get into a bidding war," says longtime CAKE volunteer Anne Marie Sticksel. "There are
a lot of emotions. I got myself in a bidding war last year, and it was probably the most intense of
any experience I have voluntarily taken part in." If the auction and readings aren't enough action
for you, there's also a raffle held throughout the night. Prizes include year-long memberships to
the MCA and the Museum of Science and Industry, unique original art, multiple gift certificates
to Blick Art Materials, and more.
The CAKE Art Auction runs from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Admission is $10. Five bucks more nets
you a raffle ticket and a drink (a selection of beers provided by local brewers Revolution; wine
and soda will also be on hand).
