  TODAYS GAY & LESBIAN EVENTS

Wednesday March 13th

Remember Clarence Darrow and his commitment to justice, morning program
10:00am

Two events. On Wednesday morning, flower tossing ceremony at the bridge in Hyde Park at 10 a.m. and nd brief speeches, as well as a special reading of excerpts from Darrow's pleading in the Leopold and Loeb case Wednesday evening Symposium celebrating Darrow's work against the death penalty at The Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton at 6 pm. Unlike past years the wreath-tossing celebration and the symposium are separate events: The morning event at the Darrow Bridge will include the traditional flower-tossing and brief speeches, as well as a special reading of excerpts from Darrow's pleading in the Leopold and Loeb case, which will be discussed in greater detail during the evening program. The topic for the evening program: The Leopold and Loeb Files: An Intimate Look at One of America's Most Infamous Crimes. The 1924 murder of fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks by Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, and their defense by Clarence Darrow, raised profound and disturbing questions about social class, criminal psychology, morality, justice, and mercy. Join Nina Barrett, author of "The Leopold and Loeb Files: An Intimate Look at One of America's Most Infamous Crimes," for a talk about why, ninety-five years later, these issues continue to haunt us-and remain relevant-today. Note: Registration is requested for the program at The Newberry Library Details are on the attached flyer. More information about the Darrow Commemorative Committee can be found at darrowbridge.org.
