Presentation opens exhibit of AIDS Awareness stamps
6:30pm

December 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the 1993 Red Ribbon for AIDS Awareness US postage stamp. The use of the untied red ribbon was created by the New York-based Visual AIDS Artists Caucus in 1991. The US postage stamped marked a significant expansion in the use of the red ribbon for AIDS Awareness. Previous AIDS Awareness stamps had been released outside the US, the first in coordination with the first World AIDS Day in 1988. The 1993 US stamp was the first to include the Red Ribbon. After the 1993 US stamp, many other countries included the Red Ribbon in their AIDS awareness stamps. In commemoration of the release of the US stamp, Gerber/Hart will have an exhibit of AIDS Awareness stamps from around the world. The exhibit will open December 13, 2018 and run through February 2019 These stamps are part of Gerber/Hart's Norman Sandfield Collection. Norman Sandfield, a lifetime collector, whose significant collection of Red Ribbon and Rainbow Pride items (among other things) is housed at Gerber/Hart, will be giving a presentation on the history and significance of the Red Ribbon for AID Awareness and the Red Ribbon stamps, as well as the the collection he has assembled of them.
