50th anniversary of Black Power Salute at 1968 Olympics

October 2018, marks the 50th anniversary of John Carlos and Tommy Smith's Black Power Salute at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. With their actions, Carlos and Smith joined the ranks of Paul Robeson, Muhammad Ali, Curt Flood, Craig Hodges, Jackie Robinson, and a host of other activist athletes. These Black athletes used their celebrity and status to bring international attention to America's pervasive racism and white supremacy. They put their hard-won privileges at risk to make visible the unacceptable conditions of Black people in America and throughout the world. Fifty years later, following the murders of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland, Eric Garner, and Laquan McDonald, the racist infrastructure of America's justice system is once again starkly apparent. Colin Kaepernick and dozens of African American athletes and allies once more are choosing to put their privilege at risk to bring the countries attention to the disparate and intolerable treatment of African Americans. Fifty years later athletes are taking a knee and raising the Black Power Salute to demand change.
Chicago's non-profit organization, Friends of Track and Field (FOTF), will celebrate John Carlos and his historic act on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at the Parkway Ballroom, 4445 S. King Drive from 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm. The discussion will be moderated by WBEZ's Natalie Moore. Tickets can be purchased for $30 at Raiseafisttakeaknee.eventbrite.com.
