October 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of John Carlos' Black Power salute at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. With his actions, John Carlos joined the ranks of Paul Robeson, Muhammad Ali, and Jackie Robinson as activist athletes. These black athletes used celebrity and access to bring international attention to America's pervasive racism. They put their hard-won privilege at risk to make visible the unacceptable treatment of black Americans.
Taking a Knee
Fifty years later, following the murders of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland, and Eric Garner, the racist infrastructure of America's justice system is once again starkly apparent. Colin Kaepernick and many African American athletes and allies once more are choosing to put their privilege at risk to bring the country's attention to the disparate and intolerable treatment of African Americans.
Creating the Change
On October 20, 2018, Chicago non-profit, Friends of Track and Field (FOTF), invite you to come celebrate and support this historic and ongoing movement with John Carlos. He will discuss his legendary decision, the legacy of African American athlete-activists, and the atmosphere and events occurring in 1968 that inspired and supported his actions at the Olympics and the devastating repercussions coming from the backlash.
The discussion will be moderated by WBEZ's Natalie Moore.
