NEWS ROUNDUP

Twelve percent of urban gay and bisexual men have attempted suicide in their lifetime, a rate three times higher than the overall rate for American adult males, according to new research from the University of California's Center for AIDS Prevention Studies, published in the August American Journal of Public Health.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Djuna R. Diabor, who worked on the city's Deep Tunnel project, has filed a civil suit against a construction company and her former supervisor, alleging sex discrimination, sexual harassment, assault and battery, and hate crime. After she told her supervisor she is a lesbian, he reportedly made sexually harassing remarks.

A gay couple on Lexington, Ky., are now proud dads of four babies. The biological father, Michael Meehan, 36, and his partner, Thomas Dysarz, 31, have named the boys Michael, Jacob and Tristan, and the girl Taylor. The mother was impregnated by Meehan.

365Gay.com reports that a Connecticut appeals court has rejected a gay couple's plea to have their union ended. Glen Rosengarten and Peter Downes were united in Vermont in 2000, but Rosengarte decided to end it one year later. The Superior Court ruled that it did not have jurisdiction, and the Appellate Court agreed...the state does not recognize Vermont's same-sex union law. And Vermont won't grant the separation either...at least one of the men must be a resident of Vermont, but both live in Connecticut (but you do not have to live in Vermont to actually qualify for the unions...a gay Catch-22).

The Providence Journal reports that a former employee has brought a discrimination suit against the Fall River Herald News and its parent, the Journal Register Company. Michael W. Freeman filed suit with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination saying he was regularly harassed by another reporter about his sexuality, while the paper did nothing to correct the situation.

365Gay.com reports on more staff and service cuts at The Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Centre, which is running a $4.4-million budget deficit.

Metropolitan Community Churches, the predominantly gay Christian church with 300 congregations in 22 countries, has received recognition from the federal government to provide chaplains to the U.S. Veterans Administration.

The Gender March Exploratory Committee has announced a meeting to plan the national gender march on Washington organization. The meeting will be held Aug. 9-11, 2002 in Atlanta; e-mail orygould@earthlink.net.

AP reports that the Ohio Supreme Court ruled a lesbian couple can legally adopt a last name they created.
